Treatment for Mouth Breathing

Mouth breathing is when you breathe primarily through the mouth. This can be caused by an obstruction in the nasal passages. It can also be caused by an obstruction in the throat, such as enlarged tonsils, adenoids, tongue muscles.

Effects Of Mouth Breathing

Mouth breathing can:

  • Cause the front teeth to protrude.
  • Shorten the dental arch.
  • Cause the lower jaw to develop improperly.
  • Leave a space between the nose and upper lip.

What Are The Symptoms Of Mouth Breathing?

Mouth breathing can lead to a number of issues, including dry mouth, tooth decay, gum disease, mouth and throat infections, mouth sores, and sleep apnea.

What Is Myofunctional Therapy?

Myofunctional therapy is a type of treatment that is used to treat the improper function of the tongue, lips, and jaw. It is aimed at treating a wide range of dental and orthodontic conditions such as sleep apnea and TMJ Disorder. It corrects mewing patterns, swallowing, and nasal breathing to prevent mouth breathing.

How Is Myofunctional Therapy Performed?

Myofunctional therapy focuses on correcting the oral habits that are causing breathing problems. The dentist may instruct you to stop mouth breathing or may refer you to a sleep specialist for evaluation.

Myofunctional therapy is a series of exercises you can do at home. We teach you to control your facial muscles and tongue. These exercises retrain the muscles in your mouth and jaw and help you breathe through your nose.

Is Myofunctional Therapy Safe?

Myofunctional therapy is a safe, noninvasive, and drug-free treatment. While mouth breathing may be a cause for concern, using mouth taping techniques, jaw alignment exercises, and other myofunctional therapy techniques can provide relief.
